Dear Parents, Carers and Friends,
Term 3 has commenced very smoothly, and the children’s joy and laughter has been a welcome and uplifting presence. I had the wonderful privilege of accompanying seven of our school leaders, Miss McDonald and Ms Jolley to the Archdiocesan NAIDOC Mass on Friday. It was a beautiful celebration, and our students did us proud reading the prayers of the faithful with confidence and clarity.
As we return to school, please ensure your child is wearing the correct full school uniform (or sports uniform on their Sport Day). Plain black leather school shoes are required with the school uniform. Joggers should only be worn on Sport Days. It is very chilly at the moment so please try to encourage your child to wear their school jumpers each morning and a navy jacket can also be worn if desired. With August beginning on Friday, a reminder that hats are required to be worn for the remainder of the year.
A reminder the school day is from 8:30 to 3:20 and students should not be at school outside these times as there is no supervision. TeamKids has vacancies if you require before or after school. No student should be at school before 8:30am.
This week our Kindergarten children will celebrate Kinder’s 100th Day at school which is sure to be a fun day for them all. I look forward to being involved in their celebration.
There are just a few teacher changes this term. Mrs Chalker has commenced maternity leave as she had a beautiful baby girl during the holidays. I welcome Miss Emma Norton to Lowe Street teaching music for the remainder of the year. Mrs Mary Langdon our dedicated teacher librarian will be on leave for the remainder of the year, and we welcome Mrs Teegan Doust back from maternity leave and into the librarian position each Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Miss Mel Sheehan will take on the Librarian position each Thursday. We have also successfully hired Janica Morella to take on the Classroom Support Teacher role to replace Maryann Tarrant after a very competitive recruitment process. Janica comes to us with a great deal of experience and expertise as Classroom Support Teacher though will not be commencing in the role until Term 4. We look forward to welcoming Janica on board. Until she commences, the class teacher or grade coordinators will be able to support with any Learning Support queries.
Just a reminder that our next Community Council meeting is being held tomorrow night at 6pm in the Lowe Street staffroom if you would like to join us. If you are unable to attend the meeting but have any feedback, questions or input please email the Community Council at
stgregorys.schoolcouncil@cg.catholic.edu.au.
This term we will be celebrating Father’s Day Breakfast and St Gregory’s Feast Day and Lap-a-thon on Wednesday 3rd September. Father’s Day Breakfast will be held at Macquoid St from 7:30am-8:30am, with orders through Qkr. Event information will be through Compass. The end of Term 3 (22nd & 23rd September) will also see the Year 5 students presenting the musical, Beauty and the Beast. Tickets will be on sale later in the term so keep an eye out for them. It is sure to be a fabulous occasion. We are also planning a Spring Community event for early Term 4 (Sunday 26th October) which will include Choir Performances, Musicorp student performances, a disco, BBQ and more! More details will come out closer to the date but pencil these dates into your calendars now. There are many other things happening this term so have a look through the school calendar and keep an eye out for any updates throughout the term.
I thank all the parents who were able to meet with the teachers either last term or last week to discuss your child’s progress. We really value these Parent/Teacher meetings in supporting the children’s progress at school. This term we welcome all parents into our Open Classrooms on Monday Week 5 (18th August) from 3:15 to 5:00pm. There is no need to book a time just pop in with your child at any point during the timeframe to have a look at what they’ve been doing at school and to chat to the classroom teacher briefly if you would like. Parents are always welcome to reach out to the class teachers via email or book an appointment to meet with a teacher anytime throughout the term. We value working with you to ensure your child/ren have the best education and time at school.
Please also pray for our Year 6 Confirmation candidates who commence their preparation this Wednesday night. Confirmation is a significant step in their faith journey, and I look forward to celebrating with them later in the term when they receive the sacrament.
I would like to pray for all those in our community who are unwell or injured.
God our Father,
We pray for those whose lives are deeply affected by illness or injury.
When they feel fragile and broken,
remind them that you call them by name and hold them in the palm of your hand.
When they feel uncertain and fearful about the future,
lead them to that perfect love which casts out all fear.
May all of us never be so taken up with our own concerns that we do not see or respond to the needs of others,
especially those who suffer in our midst.
May we all live with courage to respond to the challenges we face.
Amen
Have a blessed week.
Tiffany Reedy
BOOK WEEK
CBCA Book Week is coming up in Week 5 of term 3 (18-22 August).
This year celebrates the 80th anniversary of the CBCA Book Week. The theme for this year's book week is "Book an Adventure".
We will hold our annual Book Week Parade at each campus in week 5 of term 3:
- Lowe St:Tues 19August at 9.10am (straight after morning assembly)
- Macquoid St:Wed 20August at 9.30am
So, time to start thinking about a character to dress up as... look in your dress up box, wardrobe or the local Op-Shops for inspiration.
Costumes don’t need to be elaborate or expensive and the most imaginative ones are often ‘put together’ or constructed at home.
No prizes are awarded for costumes we just encourage everyone to dress up and join in the fun.
We look forward to seeing all of the costumes.
We will also be running some competitions in conjunction with Book Week. These will be explained to the students during their library lessons:
- Short Story:
- Students can write a short story with the theme 'Book an Adventure' in mind.
- They will be provided with 1 double sided piece of paper with lines.
- Due Tue 19 August
- Design Competition:
- Students can design the (inside) front page of a picture book.
- They will choose one of the short-listed books that will be read to them during their library lesson.
- Students will start the brainstorming in their library lesson but will need to complete the design at home.
- Due Tue 19 August
The categories for the competitions will be Years 2-3 and Years 4-6, unless one year group has an overwhelming amount of entries they will be split up further. There will be prizes for each winner and it would be great for each short story winner to read it to their grade or class.
